RIta and her three puppies began the spring of 2025 in a challenging situation, living on the streets in Quinta das Raposeiros, Santa Barbara de Nexe. Fortunately, Rita, a naturally affectionate dog, trusted in a volunteer from SBAH, who rescued her and the babies. All four dogs were taken to a veterinarian who works closely with SBAH. Fortunately, Rita and the three puppies are all healthy, have had their first vaccines as of mid-May, and are ready to be fostered. They will be available for adoption in mid-June 2025.

Rita is a sweet dog and a caring mother. She walks calmly on lead and enjoys the time exploring the world around her. She becomes comfortable with other dogs within a short time and is not reacting to cats. It seems that Rita has lived with humans previously, but her forever family should be willing to provide her with additional training. Rita is approximately 2.5 years old.

The puppies, all boys, were born in mid-March 2025. They are expected to be medium-sized dogs when fully grown, weighing approximately 18 to 25 kilograms. Andrew, the short-haired, brown puppy, already has learned to sit for treats and his siblings should follow his lead soon. Welford is the fluffy, brown pup and Sasha is the white-furred puppy. All are playful and absolutely adorable.

If you are interested in fostering Rita and/or her puppies, or in adopting one or more of the Rita Family, please contact us.

Sasha is an alert, loving puppy. Like his mom, Rita, Sasha is calm, and also very brave. He has no fear of greeting the big dogs staying in the same facility as Sasha and his family. Sasha also loves to meet new people and to climb into their laps. Sasha is getting accustomed to being placed in a harness and going for short walks.

Fostering a Doggie

Santa Barbara Animal Help does not have its own kennels, but that doesn't stop us from providing the best care possible for our furry friends. Prior to adoption, we rely on the help of kind-hearted fosters to care for the dogs or keep them in a Pet Hotel with really nice facilities.

Fostering is undoubtedly the better option, as the doggies get to live in a temporary home with people who care for them and prepare them for their forever homes, which gives them a better chance of adoption and success. Some doggies in our care are vulnerable, scared of people, or simply not used to living in a home. Living in a foster home with a person or family benefits them immensely. Even those that are not vulnerable will benefit greatly from such a stay, because regardless of the volunteers' involvement, shelters are shelters, and the dogs need constant love and care, as everyone else.

You may be wondering, "What's in it for me?" Well, if you cannot commit to adopting a dog for various reasons, fostering is a way to live with a dog temporarily while helping a beautiful being live a nice life before being re-homed.

At Santa Barbara Animal Help, we believe that every dog deserves a loving home. By fostering, you can make a difference in a dog's life and help them find their forever home. Join us in our mission to provide the best care possible for our furry friends.

Please, get in touch if you believe that you could foster one or more our doggies!

How Does Fostering Work?

Fosterer Gets in Touch

If you are interested in fostering any of the doggies below, please, contact us

The First Meet-up

Similar to the adoption process, we do everything to match the dog with the right fosterer, Once we are contacted by a person interested in fostering, we organise a meet-up in order for both the potential fosterer and the doggie to see if they are a good fit.

Visit to the Potential New Home

We arrange a visit to the potential foster home to ensure that the circumstances are right.

Fostering the Doggie

Once the fosterer and SBAH agree that everything is fine, the fosterer will sign a fostering agreement and take the dog home. Some fosterers provide everything for the dog, while others cannot. In such cases, SBAH helps with the dog's living costs. And no, the fosterer is not left on their own! We are always in touch and available at any time to help if needed.
